Bella DePaulo and I have compiled a list of works that take a critical view of the governmental role in marriage. We have added a link to your site and would like to invite you to add any other work that you think is relevant. You can find the list at http://belladepaulo.com/singles/index.php/blog/2010/09/01/many-voices-one-question-should-the-government-privilege-married-people/

Thank you!

What about if people want to commit polygamy? That's the real reason why government regulate marriage, to ration mates in equal share for everyone.

I support your position of course. But think about it. Many won't.

I'm going to explore this idea some more, but my initial reaction is "if privatization is the answer, what's the problem?" Isn't the debate really about government benefits? If so, after "privatization" of marriage, there will still be the questions of which couples or groups who call themselves "married" will get benefits and, with the underbrush cleared away, what benefits fit the state interest in marriage (if there is such an interest)?

I applaud your efforts. It is a solution that neither side of the same-sex marriage debate wants to hear, let alone debate. Both sides desperately want government marriage, yet cannot put forth a cogent reason for the government to issue marriage licenses. Also the exclusive financial bnefits given to married couples are terribly unfair to single people.
