Isn't the debate really about government benefits? If so, after "privatization" of marriage, there will still be the questions of which couples or groups who call themselves "married" will get benefits and, with the underbrush cleared away, what benefits fit the state interest in marriage (if there is such an interest)? It is a solution that neither side of the same-sex marriage debate wants to hear, let alone debate. Both sides desperately want government marriage, yet cannot put forth a cogent reason for the government to issue marriage licenses. Also the exclusive financial bnefits given to married couples are terribly unfair to single people. I applaud your efforts.
